Main Street

In 2003, three strangers came together and started a journey to improve the heart of Thurmont, Main Street. Three volunteers pursued the Maryland Main Street program to jump start revitalizing the downtown area. The Main Street Program is a community development initiative focused on revitalizing historic downtowns and commercial districts across the United States by leveraging local assets like historic architecture, cultural identity, and existing businesses to create vibrant, economically thriving areas through a comprehensive approach including preservation, promotion, design, and economic restructuring along with creating living spaces as well.

In 2005 Thurmont became a Designated Main Street Community, and in 2018 an accredited National Main Street under the National Historic Trust for Preservation.

Each year we have several signature events which include:

  • Art & Wine Strolls
  • Horse & Carriage Rides
  • Plein Air
  • Christmas in Thurmont
  • A Small Town Christmas on Main Street

Main Street Farmers Market which has won the Best of the Best for best farmers market in Frederick County for in 2023 & 2024. This is the largest market in Frederick County.

Those three volunteers? One is now the mayor, one a commissioner, and one the economic development manager.

Thurmont Main Street operates under the Town of Thurmont’s Economic Development Department and has a nonprofit, Thurmont First Inc.
