A Day In The Park Summer Program
Description
Our outdoor recreation program is held for one week each month at the Community Park on Frederick Road in Thurmont, Maryland – in rain or shine! Registration is required and limited. Each week-long theme includes nature exploration and adventure, art and science, games, animal visitors, and a mid-morning snack! The fee for the week-long program is $55.00. Each participant receives an official “A Day in the Park” t-shirt and knapsack – and more!
Week One: Wild Wonders Week June 23 – June 27 *registration closes 6/15 Monday: Where are the tiniest animals in the park? We’ll look for signs of birds and native insects, help build natural habitats, and go on a pollinator safari! Tuesday: Where does water come from and where does it go? We’ll explore the park stream, float leaf boats, and learn about aquatic habitats! Wednesday: Have you wondered what animals call the Catoctin Mountains home? We’ll learn about our local fur-bearing mammals and how we can help protect them! Thursday: What secrets do trees hold in their branches and roots? We’ll have a tremendous time with the Tree Trekkers learning more about these natural giants! AND Wags for Hope will bring a dog at 11:30! Friday: Let’s walk to the Thurmont Regional Library* for a summer fun adventure and explore the wetland habitat exhibit! *pick-up at noon at the library
Week Two: Eco-Quest Expedition July 14 – July 18 *registration closes 7/6 Monday: A Visit from a Catoctin Park Ranger! We’ll learn about becoming a park ranger and how to stay safe in the wild! We’ll also take a look at our Community Park through the eyes of animals! Tuesday: How can we protect the earth? We will play some eco-wise games, have a recycling challenge, and find new ways to take care of our planet! Wednesday: We will dig into nature today with planting, exploring, and learning all about the world of plants and gardens! We’ll find out which plants we can grow and which plants to avoid! Thursday: How much do you know about the world of owls? We’ll dissect real owl pellets to find out how these birds hunt and survive in the wild! AND Wags for Hope will bring a dog at 11:30! Friday: Let’s walk to the Thurmont Regional Library* for a NEW summer fun activity and explore the Library Walk Nature Trail! *pick-up at noon at the library
Week Three: Mad Scientist in the Wild August 4 – August 8 *registration closes 7/27 Monday: Do you believe in magic hiding in the world around you? We’ll mix mysterious potions, learn secret tricks, and discover hidden wonders on a wild outdoor adventure! Tuesday: We will be “bugging out” today as we explore pollinators and learn more about how they help our planet! We’ll get to see some bees up close with the Frederick Beekeeping Association! Wednesday: Are you a rock star? We’ll find out as we crack open geodes, experiment with minerals, and dig like a geologist to uncover the treasures beneath our feet! Thursday: What local creatures come out at night? We’ll explore echo-location and learn all about bats and how we can support these beneficial animals! AND Wags for Hope will bring a dog at 11:30! Friday: Let’s walk to the Thurmont Regional Library* for an outdoor adventure and a NEW activity that helps us learn more about the science of our natural world! *pick-up at noon at the library Daily themes may change.
